Alpha-lipoic Acid

Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) is a caprylic acid-derived antioxidant and composed of a dithiol functional group that helps in the elimination of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by reduction of other molecules. The thiol group of ALA acts as a chelator that preferentially binds with Zn, Pb, and Cu. ALA is synthesized in mitochondria and the dithiol functional group is responsible for its redox chemical reactivity where the oxidized form lipoic acid (LA) as well as reduced form dihydrolipoic acid (DHLA) both help in scavenging ROS.  It is an important cofactor that plays a crucial role in enzymatic nutrient metabolism and subsequently increases glutathione synthesis.
